Sample Script:
Dear [Senator or Representative ___________],
The coronavirus pandemic has shown that we are all in this together, interconnected, and that our ability to defeat the pandemic and recover economically will depend on us all coming together. This is why we must include all Americans in the economic recovery that Congress passes, especially at a time when immigrants of all statuses are overrepresented as essential workers that are making this country run. Continuing to exclude families based on immigration status will undermine the economic prosperity of all.
The next COVID-19 bill should also include strict conditions or guardrails for emergency funding for USCIS. Accountability is direly needed from the agency that has proposed and implemented so many inefficient and wasteful policies that limit access to citizenship and other benefits. Conditions should include halting the proposed fee increases; preserving fee waivers; requiring USCIS to issue guidance on initial applications so that the administration cannot continue to flaunt the Supreme Court and rule of law; among other accountability conditions. Otherwise, Congress will be allowing USCIS to pass the buck of its own mismanagement onto low-income and working class immigrants. The Trump administration will increase citizenship fees from $725 to $1,1170 and eliminate most fee waivers, effective on October 2, so it is urgent that Congress acts to stop this.
Thank you,
